St. Luke: 26And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
30And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
37For with God nothing shall be impossible.
39And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
43And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
46And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
49For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
52He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
2Timothy: This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
7Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
12Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
13But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
17That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Looking forward and looking back is Advent’s focus. In today’s readings, we see again that amazing announcement from the angel Gabriel to the young woman Mary – she will conceive Him that will be “32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” These two verses look forward and back all at once; Gabriel states Jesus shall be (future) Son of the Highest, while bringing the past – the history of David and Jacob in the Old Testament – to mind. Jesus is, of course, the fulfillment of the Old Testament and is the New Testament.
2Timothy verse 15, “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” is forward and back at once, remembering Jesus when He walked with us on earth and His offering of salvation for all time and that we await the Second Coming.
It’s important for us to remember that for God, all this ‘forward and back’ is one and the same thing – He knows all things of all times at any instant; it is all ‘one day’; one moment to God. But we need the little boxes of information, we need the arrows that point forward and back, in order to grasp the momentous event that is the birth Christ Jesus.
