2 And he taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,
3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:
6 But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.
13 And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?
18 And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
Sometimes I get weighed down by the news. So much anger and unhappiness and aggression and fear mongering. If I allow myself to dwell on it, I find myself shaking my head – I don’t understand; how, from where we started, did we get here? The easy, obvious answer is ‘one step at a time’.
” And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth: But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.” We seem to have lost our root, the thing that gives us sustenance.
St. John tells us in chapter five, starting with the fifth verse, “ I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.“
So much of the world has wandered away from our Root – our Vine – that we can hardly be surprised if the world is in such a mess as we find it today.
When the world, and news thereof, gets us down, it’s important to remember that Jesus overcame the world and with Him and in Him and through Him, so have we.
