16 And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them?
21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.
23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.
29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
The last verse always reminds me of this verse: 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Phil 4) All throughout the New Testament, we read that Jesus would go off by Himself to pray. Of course He was Jesus – God and Man in One – but He was also human and had need for quiet prayer as we do, so when He says the evil spirit can only come out with the exorcist having practiced the dual activities of prayer and fasting, He is modeling what our lives should be. And following on from that, with prayer and fasting we can do all things through Christ Who strengthens us.
Certainly, we will never do the things that Jesus did when He walked with us but He also tells us we can do such things: 12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. (John 14) So we can ask for healing, ask for all the things that are in God’s will for us and through Jesus we are doing as Jesus did.
According to His will.
