1Corinthians 1: 1 – 17

Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,

2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

3 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;

5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;

6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:

7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

This verse resonates with me this morning. 10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. There is much in the news lately about changes that are happening across many places in regard to Christianity. Upsetting changes; changes that make us wonder if the world has turned upside down. “But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.” (Joshua 23:8)

Keep the words of Jesus ever before you, in your mind and in your heart, and you will never be deceived or misled. Keep the faith once delivered and you will not be deceived or misled. “3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Jude 1)

Interesting day, yesterday. Internet was down most of the day (why does it take so long for them to get it back up and running? Another mystery, I suppose). Then there was Stations of the Cross and after that, Ash Wednesday Mass. In between, people in the house for various reasons and the hubby not feeling well and so … but we’re back now and moving forward.

“10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” Perfectly joined together. That was the purpose of the Ecumenical Councils. ” The idea of an ecumenical council is that it is a gathering of leaders of the whole church (oikoumene – inhabited world or household in Greek) to determine doctrine and/or practical matters.” (lifepacific.libguides.com)

The Councils are why we are able to say, “we hold that faith which has been believed everywhere, always, by all.” (Vincent Le’rins [d 445], monk and author of Christian writings). It is what is meant by (small ‘c’) catholic – universal; believed everywhere, always, by all. It is because of the Coucil of Nicaea that we are able to profess, “I believe in one God, the Father almighty, make of heaven and earth … ” It is because of these staunch men of deep faith that even to this day, we practice and believe ‘the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.’ (Jude 1:3)
