14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
7 But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
11 These things command and teach.
13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
Sometimes the words just jump out at us, don’t they? “8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” Now who in the world would consider themselves ‘godly’? We know we are a broken, and fallen humanity, in constant need of our Lord Jesus Christ. But consider this … if we pray daily, if we praise His name, if we thank Him for all the wonders He has given us, if we go to church weekly and attend Bible study, if we focus on “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8), if we are good and kind to each other and the stranger, then we are, perhaps, ‘godly’ in our way of living our lives.
Just keep in mind … it’s not because of ourselves that we may be godly, it’s only through Christ who strengthens us (Phil 4:13) and “but with God, all things are possible” (Matt 19:26) and “That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;” (Eph 3:16).
