When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

In that time and place, widows relied on their male children to care for them financially, as well as making sure they were safe and comfortable. Jesus, deep in His passion and pain, doesn’t forget to see to the care of His mother. Why did He give her care to the disciple John (often referred to as the disciple whom Jesus loved)? Of the twelve disciples, Judas is dead, and all the other ten are in hiding from the Jews. John is the only one of the original twelve brave enough and loving enough to be there at the feet of Jesus, high up on that cross.

We’d like to think that in that situation, we would be like John, the disciple to whom Jesus entrusted the care of His own mother but I can’t help but suspect we’d be more like the ten, in hiding, fearing for our lives, and leaving Jesus to face this horror on the tree by Himself. Let’s learn from this that we are to be bold and brave in our belief and worship of Jesus.
