Colossians 3: 12 – 17

March 5, 2023

14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Since the onset of ‘the virus’, people have derided Zoom and Face Book live stream and such. I understand – I’m not going to discuss the politics of that situation but want, instead, to extoll the virtues of real time live streaming.

As we age, and sometimes for physical reasons not related to age, it becomes more difficult to get around or sometimes folks have to give up driving for whatever reasons. This is simply the facts of life. So to have our church services and Masses live streamed is a boon and a blessing to the house bound. There’s an old saying, “A friend in need is a pest indeed” so we may feel badly about asking someone to drive us to church each Sunday. For those who must, live stream IS our Mass or service. As in verse 16, through live stream, we can do all those things and join our prayers with the congregation. We can even participate in Holy Communion using this form:

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

OUR FATHER, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect

LET the power of the Holy Spirit come upon me, O Lord, I beseech thee: that he may both mercifully cleanse my heart and defend me from all adversities. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle (Revelation 3:20)

BEHOLD, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

The Gospel (St. John 15:5)

I AM the vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Act of Contrition

O GOD, I am very sorry that I have sinned against thee who art so good. Forgive me for Jesus’ sake, and I will try to sin no more.

Act of Reception

IN Union, dear Lord, with the faithful at every altar of thy Church where thy blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father, I desire to offer thee praise and thanksgiving. I believe that thou art truly present in the Holy Sacrament. And since I cannot now receive thee sacramentally, I beseech thee to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself unto thee, and embrace thee with all the affections of my soul. Let me never be separated from thee. Let me live and die in thy love.
Amen.

COME Lord Jesus, dwell in thy servant in the fullness of thy strength, in the perfection of thy ways, and in the holiness of thy spirit, and rule over every hostile power in the might of thy Spirit, and to the glory of thy Father. Amen.

MAY the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve my body and soul unto everlasting life. Amen.

Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me;
Blood of Christ, inebriate me;
Water from the side of Christ, wash me;
Passion of Christ, strengthen me;
O good Jesus, hear me;
Within thy wounds hide me;
Suffer me not to be separated from thee;
From the malicious enemy defend me;
In the hour of my death call me,
And bid me come to thee.
That with thy Saints I may praise thee
For ever and ever. Amen.
 In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Colossians 3: 12 – 17

February 3, 2023

12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Don’t you love it when the instructions are this simple? I’ve done recipes that are more complex.

The problem is … and you knew this was coming … actually doing and following the instructions. Human beings have a talent for picking and choosing what they will or won’t do. There was an old joke about life being from a Chinese restaurant menu – take one from column A and two from column B. Unfortunately, a Christian’s choice is limited. But it is limited in the very best way – choose Jesus and forget the rest.

My mind, after reading verse 17, immediately went to this hymn. You may not have ever heard the ‘long’ version of this hymn so I’m going to share it with you now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX5-ZW7nWlY

This is what we sing in church each Sunday – and what I find myself singing sometimes as I’m about my chores … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N74qPvJxg-I

But there are no prettier voices than the ones we hear in church – untrained voices singing this hymn from their hearts.

Praise God.
