33 And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.
36 And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant.
37 And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by.
38 And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
41 Saying, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
42 And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.
“… but he cried so much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.” Our hearts cry out, too. Lord, have mercy upon us; Christ, have mercy upon us; Lord, have mercy upon us. “But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders.” (Morning Prayer, 1928 BCP) “Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,” (Holy Communion; General Confession, BCP) “O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.” (Gloria in Excelsis, BCP).
We can never be that good that we don’t cry out to Him for His mercy. Our need for His mercy is in our DNA. Ever we reach out to Him in our dire need – “And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” (Luke 18:13)
