3 And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.
6 For he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid.
11 And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?
I have the great good fortune to have an excellent Bible study at my church; it just so happens we’re studying St. Mark’s Gospel. Sometimes I don’t always understand how a verse selection pertains to a season of the Church year. But because of Bible study, these verses are abundantly clear here in pre-Lent. Our priest, Fr. Harlow, pointed out that the above verses marks a pivotal change in the discourse of Jesus. Now He is pointing toward Calvary and the teaching of His death and Resurrection.
I often think of the story of St. Philip and the eunuch: 29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. 30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. (Acts 8). A good Bible study does that exact thing – opens the Scripture to us so that we might have a clearer and more fulfilling understanding.
