Hebrews 13: 17 – 25

17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

18 Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.

19 But I beseech you the rather to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner.

20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

22 And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written a letter unto you in few words.

23 Know ye that our brother Timothy is set at liberty; with whom, if he come shortly, I will see you.

24 Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you.

25 Grace be with you all. Amen. (Written to the Hebrews from Italy, by Timothy.)

This is worth repeating, “Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, 21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

In every good work … sometimes I think of what I call ‘Holy Spirit moments’. Say you’re at the grocery store and someone asks you to reach something on the top shelf because they are short – it was you but timing is everything, isn’t it? Who’s in charge of time? Or you just get this feeling you should call a friend and then they tell of something that’s troubling them and you’ve been the shoulder they needed. Timing. Or – and this actually happened – a co-worker suddenly overtaken by dizziness, just sits on the floor; people are gathering around her and she’s craning her neck to answer their questions. I sat on the floor next to her. I was in my business clothes – why would I sit down on the dusty carpet with her? I don’t know, I just know that at that moment, it was the right thing to do because she could speak to me directly and because two on the floor seemed less strange than one on the floor with a group around her. Holy Spirit moment.

‘Every good work’ can be small things as well as big ones – and the smaller ones seem to happen more frequently anyway. Do all good things to the glory of God.

  1. The small things we do to help others are often more effective than the big gestures. Listening really carefully without interrupting to what someone has to say is actually very difficult but is so important.
